MY TEACHING
Mr. James Stacey. November 2022.
I hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE, Primary), and a U.K teaching Licence (QTS). I also hold ESL teaching qualifications. I have completed PYP I.B training, Cambridge International Curriculum training, and continue to work on my professional development with a focus on child-centered teaching strategies. I am passionate about child-centered learning, game-based learning, translanguaging, books, and design. I also recently became a Certified Minecraft Education Edition Teacher. English Language Teaching
I completed a CELTA course and moved to Tokyo where I worked for 3 years as a teacher for SHANE English Schools Japan. The experience was great but I wanted to develop my teaching skills and professionalism further. PGCE Certification I entered a U.K university full-time and completed a one year PGCE in Elementary Education. This a Level 7 academic qualification. The course provider is ranked as 'outstanding' by OFSTED. The course was demanding but also very rewarding. NQT Certification and Licence at a 'Best Practice Representative' School After achieving QTS I joined a U.K. elementary school as an NQT and completed my NQT training. It is excellent school with an amazing, hard-working staff. They have been consistently ranked high in national value-added league tables and are considered a best practice representative. I completed my NQT year there and gained my teaching licence to teach in U.K. state schools. Tokyo Teacher Experiences
I returned to Japan in 2007 and joined Tokyo International School, and The British School, as a supply teacher while I looked for a fulfilling full-time position. In 2008 I started working as a grade 2 teacher at Tokyo Korean School, a school that has its own partial immersion curriculum. During my time here I have been responsible for the professional development of staff, the design of theme based curriculum in grades 2 and 3, and the creation of the school library. Managerial Experience In 2014/2015 I worked as the Saturday manager for TIS's after-school program. I trained and supported their teaching staff of around 15 teachers, as well as developed and improved their Saturday school program. This managerial role was immensely rewarding and allowed me to gain another skill set and further understanding of how successful schools are managed. Librarian Design, Building, and Programs Using a 10 million yen budget from the Korean government Mr. Michael Kelly and I designed and built the current English/Korean library at Tokyo Korean School, Tokyo. You can view our efforts here - www.tokoslibrary.com/ For 6 years I was responsible for The Sakura Medal reading program at the school, and for author visits. Two notable author visit were Kim Jung Gi - link here, and Satoshi Kitarmura - link here. Continued Professional Development I have completed Category 1 IB philosophy and implementation training. My current professional development is a Level 7 (Masters) academic qualification. The focus is on learner-centered strategies, motivation, self efficacy, and translanguaging. Current Teaching Position Currently, I am a Grade 6 teacher at Tokyo Korean School. Before that I was a classroom teacher and a library coordinator/teacher at the school.
